5.4 Spatial distribution

AT amphora sherds are found in features throughout the excavation including in the zones with evidence for habitation (zones 6, 7, 11 and 12) and industrial activities (zones 2, 4, 6) (Tables 2–3). However, zone 12 with 43% of the number of sherds and 24% of the weight contains the largest assemblage of AT amphora (Table 2). Features with AT amphorae include several of the artisanal pits from zone 2 and many of the deep wells from the domestic areas of the site. Sherds were also reused to create various amphora pavements and layers, which are found throughout the excavation. In contrast, the North African Punic amphora (61 sherds) are generally confined to the industrial areas (zones 2 and 4), while there is only one vessel from the habitation area in zone 12.

5.5 Frequency

Although AT amphorae are found in a large number and variety of features (Table 3), they typically account for less than 1% of the number and weight of amphora from each feature. There are a small number of features, such as the ditch F02140, well PT6036, pit FS7250 and well PT14240 (Table 3), with relatively larger assemblages of AT amphora.
